With a new year upon us, it’s a chance to start fresh – a sort of reboot. We could all certainly use that after the year we just had. A great way to start fresh is to set new goals for yourself.
Goals give your life a sense of purpose
Ever feel like your just going through the motions? Like you’re on auto-pilot and just responding to what others want you to do – in reactive mode? It could very well be because you haven’t set any goals for yourself lately. Without your own goals, your days can quickly be filled up working on achieving others’ goals. This can leave you feeling pretty worn down and unfulfilled.
The good news is you can change this by sitting down and listing a few things you would like to accomplish in the next few weeks, months, and even years. Spending time working on your own goals will help you take control of your life back and give you your own sense of purpose. Having your own goals gives you something meaningful to focus on and work toward, and can also give you a sense of accomplishment.
Having goals helps you become your best self
When you have goals, many times it requires stepping out of your comfort zone, which encourages growth. It may even require some bravery, but it can be incredibly rewarding and give you the motivation you need to make things happen that you’ve only dreamed about up until now. Along the way, you’ll start to notice that your goals also help to build you up and help you believe in yourself. Goals help you determine what you really want out of life, which put you on the pathway to becoming your best self.
Tracking your goals creates accountability
Once you’ve come up with your goals, you should start tracking them. Items you track stay in front of you, become your priority, keep you laser-focused, and keep you from procrastinating. You can even try a few simple strategies to help you stay accountable:
- Write down your goals and add things to your calendar or daily planner.
- Tell friends and family your goals. They can help keep you on track.
- Use an app or website to track your progress and remind you of things along the way.
Breaking goals down into manageable steps makes them more attainable
Sometimes goals seem so big that they look and feel like Mount Everest – nearly impossible. But if you break your goals down into smaller, more manageable goals, you can chip away at them little by little. These little wins will give you the momentum you need to keep moving forward.
So as you start this new year, think about what you really want to accomplish. It’s great to dream big, just break those goals down so they are achievable and remember to keep track of what you expect to accomplish. That way you will always keep moving forward, maybe even become a successful tax preparer!
